Hughston Clinic Uses ePROs to Support Value-Based Care & Research

Hughston Clinic, a leader in orthopedics and sports medicine, has partnered with PatientIQ, a leader in outcomes management, patient engagement, and analytics software, to implement an integrated patient-reported data collection strategy in support of new value-based care and clinical research initiatives.

Electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs) have become increasingly important and necessary components of value-based care models. As a result, healthcare providers must collect patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) with high compliance from patients for participation in multi-disciplinary research and quality improvement initiatives.

Hughston Clinic will be leveraging PatientIQ’s technology to systematically capture patient-reported outcomes on all patients. Care teams will utilize the data to unlock efficiencies in-clinic and continuously improve patient-centered care. PatientIQ’s software interfaces with Hughston’s athenahealth electronic health record (EHR) to automatically filter, segment, and engage patients using a rules-based workflow engine. The EHR-integrated, cloud-based platform makes it easy for Hughston Clinic’s providers to deliver highly personalized care plans while staying connected with their patients throughout an episode of care.

Patients will automatically receive email or text message notifications from their care team, prompting them to complete brief surveys about their symptoms. At specific intervention points during an episode of care, patients complete clinically validated ePROs and satisfaction surveys from any internet-connected device. Patients also receive evidence-based self-management guidelines and patient education materials to optimize them for the best possible outcomes. Examples may include multimedia content on addressing symptoms, preparing for upcoming procedures, or completing physical therapy exercises at home.

This process enables Hughston Clinic’s care teams to provide timely interventions for patients with more severe patient-reported symptoms, potentially decreasing avoidable emergency department visits and hospitalizations. As a result, providers can increase patient time on treatment and quality of life for a truly patient-centric care model. In addition, PatientIQ’s proven workflows and industry-leading compliance rates result in a better patient experience and enhanced shared-decision making between patients and healthcare providers.

PatientIQ will benchmark patient-reported outcomes and conduct regular analysis of this data, saving Hughston Clinic time and resources. In addition, users can leverage PatientIQ’s biostatistical modeling engine, Analytics Autopilot, to auto-generate data visualizations, methodology reports, data exports, and computational text summaries to be used in support of evidence-based care, outcomes-based research, and quality reporting.
